Getting Your First Show Puppy

Your choice of a breeder could be the single most important decision
you make regarding your future dog.

If you are serious about successfully showing a dog, purchase from a breeder who has obtained championships on their dogs and are actively involved in the sport.

The three reasons to purchase from a breeder who shows:
1) Your breeder will be able to help and guide you. They are a wealth of information and have a personal interest vested in you and your dog.
2) Quality is not produced by chance. Look for a dog with champions "up close" in their pedigrees, not several generations back. Lots can change in a few generations.
3) How can a breeder that hasn't shown select a show potential puppy for you? If they lack the knowledge and experience, it's unlikely they could produce a quality specimen, let alone grade a litter to determine show potential. Just because someone can whelp a litter of puppies doesn't prove they know about conformation.

Of course, showing is not the only important thing to consider when choosing a breeder. Health and temperament are just as important, so do your research! Utilize OFA's online database to verify health testing and do reputation checks with the breeder's local clubs/rescues.

Prior to purchasing a dog, join a kennel club and learn the ropes. Your involvement will help find breeder contacts, aiding in your ability to choose a respected breeder with nice dogs. Purchasing a puppy should not be the first step in your learning process, so don't rush into a purchasing decision.

Most serious breeders are hesitant to let their top show picks go to an inexperienced newbie. You'll have a better shot of obtaining a nice dog if they know you're serious and this isn't just some whim that you might drop in a week. Prove you're serious by volunteering with your local clubs and getting involved.

Contact your breed's parent club to find a breed club in your state which you can join. If your breed club isn't active or is a considerable distance away, see if you can find an all-breed club to join.

On to your first show...
